Once known only for coal and wineries, the Newcastle / Hunter Valley region is rapidly reinventing itself and moving into the 21st century as a “satellite city” to Sydney and one of the most successful economic regions in Australia. With a population of approximately 570,000 (around 150,000 in Newcastle itself) the sub-tropical Newcastle / Hunter Valley region covers an area of 31,000km, boasts a wide variety of natural resources, and is a hotbed of business innovation.

The region is a transport hub for road, rail, air and sea, only two hours’ drive from Sydney, with Australia’s second-busiest harbour and an airport (shared with Williamstown Air Force Base) which has seen passenger traffic increase by over 300% since the introduction of low-cost airlines. This has added to the huge growth experienced by tourism (1.5 million visitors each year) and hospitality over the last decade, and the area’s natural beauty and proximity to Sydney have also seen the development of a major conference and convention industry (around 100,000 delegates each year).

Many new residents have been attracted into the area by the expansion of the higher education sector, which is also now a major employer. Business and professional services, health care, arts and culture and major annual festivals including music, film, and sporting events are also new strings to the region’s bow. Newcastle’s housing prices are significantly lower than Sydney’s and this has also brought a large number of “commuting residents” to the region.

As a result of changes to the region’s employment structure, average income has increased and the majority of the Newcastle workforce is now made up of professionals and associate pro¬fessionals (33.6%), followed by managers and administrators (5.4%).
