Once known only as a “sheep and fruit” locality, the go-ahead region of Hawke’s Bay has now remodelled itself into a premier tourist destination, gourmet’s paradise, cultural mecca and hive of small-to-medium business activity. Stretching from the Mahia Peninsula south to Cape Kidnappers on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, the Hawke’s Bay area is now home to around 145,000 people, drawn by a combination of great work opportunities and emphasis on lifestyle.

Tourism is now one of the top 10 industries in the region, bringing in excess of $390 million and 2.2 million local and international visitors (in 2005), as a result of aggressive marketing and promotion of the area and its many attractions. The region’s Mediterranean-style climate is not only a drawcard for conference attendees, tourists and permanent settlers, but has proven ideal for viticulture, with some 30 vineyards dotting the region and varieties such as chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, gewürztraminer, merlot and pinot noir all on offer. Where there’s wine, there’s gourmet food and the area is also well-known for top-quality restaurants showcasing the finest local produce, culminating in the annual Harvest Hawke’s Bay Wine Festival. The twin cities of Napier and Hastings, home to many art and craft galleries, also host the famous Art Deco Weekend, a celebration of the region’s 1930’s architecture, complete with vintage cars, glamorous period costumes, and live jazz.

A major expansion to the Port of Napier is underway, with a new $NZ 47 million multipurpose wharf, due to be completed in early 2010, and a $NZ 30 million industrial estate is also being developed in Ahuriri, in Napier. Timber, fruit-growing and wool production are still all important industries to the area, but local authorities have also worked hard to encourage business investment in the area, with engineering, software, and health, transport and property/business services all adding to the region’s economic diversity. Internet-based businesses with international customers also represent a growing sector of the economy.

Organisations such as the Hawke’s Bay Exporters’ Club, the Napier City Council and Hawke’s Bay Inc are particularly supportive of new businesses, through a number of initiatives designed to further develop the region.
