Rich in history, creativity and natural resources, with sweeping ocean vistas, fertile farmlands and virgin forests, the warm (sub-tropical) region of Northland is, as the name suggests, the northernmost part of New Zealand. From Cape Reinga, at it’s northern tip, stretching south to Mangawhai, an hour’s drive north of Auckland, the region covers 1.25 million hectares, yet no part of Northland is more than 40km from a coast. The region’s oceanic attractions such as surf beaches, diving and game-fishing spots, secluded islands, and amazing scenery such as the Bay of Islands are all popular with tourists. Regarded as the birthplace of the New Zealand nation for its significance to both Maori and Pakeha (European) history, the Northland region today is home to some 148,500 people, and can be broadly divided into three sub-regions: Kaipara, Whangarei and the Far North. Altogether, the Northland region has an annual GDP of around $NZ 3.4 billion, and has attracted a great deal of new investment in recent years.
Northland has a leisurely side too - many international yachts also come to seek temporary or permanent moorings in the beautiful region’s beautiful harbours, and some of the world’s top-ranked golf courses also dot the region.
While the economy was historically based around agriculture/pastoral farming, horticulture, and forestry, other sectors such as tourism, food processing, floriculture, construction and marine engineering have now risen to economic prominence. There is a solid manufacturing base in the Whangerei region, which includes New Zealand’s largest cement manufacturer, the country’s only oil refinery, and a deep water port at Marsden Point. The Kaipara region, with its high rainfall, ancient Kauri forests, surf beaches and green dairy pastures, is also a tourist haven and horticultural paradise, with newer crops such as grapes and olives being grown alongside kumara (sweet potato). The Far North includes charming coastal towns, tourist hot-spots and areas of great spiritual, historical and cultural significance such as Cape Reinga and Waitangi, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The Far North is also growing in economic stature as a centre for horticulture, organics and niche industries such as porcelain and bone china production made from the region’s white clay deposits.
Emerging industries such as arts/media, mining, aquaculture, and professional and retail services have also added to Northland’s economic strength and diversity.
