The beautiful and historic Otago region is situated at the southern end of New Zealand’s South Island, and is made up of the Waitaki and Balclutha districts, the city of Dunedin, and the Central Otago region, including Alexandra and Cromwell and the famous Southern Lakes resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka. The total population is around 185,000, with an estimated two-thirds of that living in Dunedin, the second most-populated city in the South Island.

Otago has a colourful history, with a heritage that includes ancient Maori culture, nineteenth-century whaling, a strong Scottish influence, and a gold rush in the 1860’s, with many historic buildings and sites of interest still drawing tourists today. Visitors also flock to the area’s wildlife and marine wonders, with the Otago Peninsula boasting seals, albatross and rare penguins, among other unique attractions such as the giant boulders of Moeraki.

The expansion of the Dunedin and Queenstown international airports, and the growing reputation of Queenstown as the adventure tourism capital of the world, with activities such as sky-diving, ski-ing and bungy-jumping (not to mention the wineries and restaurants), all of which bring thousands to the region each year, have made tourism and hospitality among the most significant contributors to Otago’s economy.

Education and health services including Dunedin’s University of Otago (founded in 1869), Otago Polytechnic and Dunedin College of Education, and the Otago District Health Board are also major employers. Other key industries in Dunedin include retail, communication, property and business services, publishing, manufacturing and food processing, with household-name brands such as Fisher & Paykel and Cadbury based here. Other important sectors for the wider Otago region include agriculture, forestry, fishing, and coal mining.
